Fans of Gervais’ show will have to say goodbye to Tony Johnson and the rest of the Tambury crew when After Life season 3 premieres, which will be its final.
Even while it’s upsetting for those who would want to spend more time with Tony Johnson and company, fans will be happy to know that Gervais has decided to call it quits on his own terms. Fans of the series will be pleased to know that After Life comes to a satisfying conclusion as a complete series with a satisfying conclusion.
Can We Expect After Life Season 4?
In the end, After Life is a complete series, with a finale that will please those who have been following it since the beginning (which you can read about here, but be warned: spoilers follow).
Because I’ve constructed such a vast world, Gervais explained: he felt the show had the potential for a third season. “With so many characters and a wide range of topics, it’s hard to keep up with everything that’s going on. A few extra minutes were required for me to complete the task.”
After saying that he “didn’t plan the third,” he went on to explain that”I never plan a second. I hope there’s a second, but I even made the first season [in a way] that it could end there if something happened. Like if no one watched it, if the broadcaster said, ‘That was the biggest flop ever, or I got hit by a bus.
“And I never really planned the third until it happened. I said to Netflix, ‘I’ll do a third if the second goes down a storm because you don’t want to do it for the sake of it. You want it to be demanded.”
In light of the fact that the series has been seen by more than 100 million people, would Gervais be inclined to return to these characters and the imaginary town of Tambury?
And that’s a definite no?
“Never say never,” he said diplomatically. “You never know what’s going to happen. But at the moment, I’m 99% sure this should be it. I don’t think I can top that ending. And it’s not the end. It’s there forever. It’ll always be around. People are watching it for the 10th time. And hopefully, they’re going to be watching it when I’m dead.
“I think it’s the right decision [to leave it there]. In 10 years’ time, I think I’ll be proved right.’
However, Gervais plans to reassemble the actors in the future: he hopes to bring back Kath (Diane Morgan), Lenny (Tony Way), and Brian (David Earl). “I’m going to work with all these people again. The chance of us all getting together again is astronomical.”
However, it’s not certain if any of these characters will feature in his future project with the streaming service.
