As a teenager, McMillon got his first job as a summer associate at Walmart. During the summer, he worked in a distribution center unloading trucks. McMillon went to the University of Arkansas after high school and got his bachelor’s degree there in 1989.McMillon went to the University of Tulsa to get a Master of Business Administration (MBA). He called Walmart and told an executive that he wanted to train to become a buyer when he finished his studies. Soon after that, McMillon went back to Walmart and got a job as an assistant manager at a store in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
After getting his MBA in 1991, McMillon moved to Walmart’s headquarters in Bentonville and joined the training program for new buyers. At first, he was in charge of buying fishing gear. Later, he took on different roles as a buyer and merchandiser, dealing in food, clothes, crafts, and furniture.
