Music Career
Julian met guitarist Nick Valensi and drummer Fab Moretti at Manhattan’s Dwight School, where they started making music together. He met guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. after moving to New York. In 1998, they started a band called Casablancas. Nikolai Fraiture was the lead singer and main songwriter, and he also played the bass.
The band started practicing 14 songs, including “Alone, Together,” “Barely Legal,” “Last Nite,” “The Modern Age,” “New York City Cops,” “Soma,” “Someday,” “Take it or Leave it,” and “This Life” (an early version of “Trying Your Luck”). Most of the songs’ words were different. A picture of the reformed Rough Trade Records in the UK sparked interest in the first issue of the UK magazine NME, which offered a free download of “Last Nite” before the release of The Modern Age EP in 2001. The EP gave record labels the biggest competition for a rock and roll band in years. After that, is this it? The Strokes’ critically acclaimed first album came out. People liked the album Is This It? and it set the stage for what people thought would “save rock” in the future. The Strokes were thought to be the most influential garage rock band of the 2000s.0
Solo Projects

As a solo musician, Casablancas wanted to be successful. Julian was able to express his beliefs through music because he had a musical project outside of the band.
His first solo album, Phrazes for the Young, was inspired by Oscar Wilde’s book “Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young,” which came out in November 2009. Together with Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes, Jason Lader produced the album. The album had a new wave and electronic influences, and Casablancas used synthesizers on many of the songs. He talked about his new influences by saying, “I would’ve made weirder music, but I wanted to be smart. If people heard the first few seconds of the album and thought, “Oh, this is his strange abstract thing,” I would have preferred they not write off the entire project. I have put in far too much work for that to occur. I wanted to find a way to bridge the gap between classical music and electronic music with my unique voice.++6
Julian planned his live solo debut for a private party in Tokyo, Japan, for a fashion brand ceremony. Casablancas performed a series of shows with his live show band, The Sick Six. The team consisted of Jeff Kite (keyboard), JP Bowersock (guitar), Nelson London (synthesizer), Danielle Haim (percussion), and Alex Carapetis (drums). From November 2009 to July 2010, Casablancas and The Sick Six made multiple trips to the US, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
Casablancas wrote, “I Like the Night” as part of a deal to promote Azzaro’s Decibel men’s fragrance. On September 1, 2011, the Casablancas ad for Azzaro Decibel started airing in France. He then went on to host a monthly music show called “Culture Void” on Sirius XMU from May 2016 to February 2017. On this show, he shared music from a variety of genres.
