Kimberly Guilfoyle was born in San Francisco, California, on March 9, 1969. She grew up in the Mission District of San Francisco and in Westlake, in Daly City, California. Her Puerto Rican mother, Mercedes, was a special education teacher. Kimberly was only 11 years old when she died of leukemia.

Her father, Anthony Guilfoyle, was born in Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, and moved to the United States when he was 20 years old. Even though he was not yet a U.S. citizen, he was drafted into the Army in 1958 and served for four years. He worked in construction and then bought and sold houses until he died in 2008.

Kim got a high honors degree from the University of California, Davis. In 1994, she graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law with a Juris Doctor. She was a model for Victoria’s Secret and Macy’s and did an internship at the San Francisco district attorney’s office while she was in law school. Guilfoyle went on to study at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, where she published research on children’s rights and European Economic Community Law.

After law school, Guilfoyle worked briefly as a prosecutor in San Francisco. However, she was fired in 1996 along with 13 other city prosecutors by the new District Attorney, Terence Hallinan. Then she moved to Los Angeles, where she worked as an assistant district attorney for four years. Here, she worked on domestic violence, drugs, kidnapping, robbery, arson, sexual assault, and homicide cases involving adults and teens.

She won several awards for her work, including “Prosecutor of the Month.” In 2000, she was hired back as an assistant district attorney in San Francisco. Guilfoyle helped convict James Hammer in the People v. Noel and Knoller case in 2002. A dog mauling was at the center of the second-degree murder trial.
