Russell M Nelson Early Life
Russell M. Nelson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 9, 1924. His parents were Floss Edna and Marion Clavar Nelson. Marjory E and Enid were his sisters, and Robert H. was his brother. Nelson’s father was a reporter for the Deseret News and later became the general manager of Gillham Advertising, Utah’s first advertising agency. His parents weren’t very involved in the Latter-day Saint faith when he was young, but they did send him to Sunday School, and he was baptized into the LDS Church at age 16.

Nelson went to LDS Business College when he was in his mid-teens (while still in high school) and worked at a bank as an assistant secretary. At 16, he finished high school and went to the University of Utah, where he got a Bachelor of Arts degree and became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He was in Sigma Chi’s Beta Epsilon chapter and Owl and Key while he was at the University of Utah. Nelson then went to the University of Utah School of Medicine and graduated as the top student in 1947 with a Doctor of Medicine degree. Nelson started his first year of medical school while he was still in college. He finished the four-year M.D. program in only three years.
Nelson did his medical residency at the University of Minnesota after he finished medical school. During his time at the University of Minnesota, he was part of surgeon Clarence Dennis’s groundbreaking research team that made the heart-lung machine that was used in the first open-heart surgery on a human using cardiopulmonary bypass in April 1951. Nelson got his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1954 for his research.

Russell Nelson met Dantzel White, a fellow student at the University of Utah, in 1942. After dating for three years, the couple got married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1945.
