Dooley was born on September 4, 1932, in Mobile, Alabama. He came from Ireland and Italy. The Brothers of the Sacred Heart ran the McGill Institute, which he went to. He played on McGill’s sports team, which was called the Yellow Jackets. For a few years, he thought basketball was his best sport.

Dooley got a football scholarship to Auburn University, where he played college football and later coached under Ralph “Shug” Jordan. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business management in 1954 and was a member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. From 1954 to 1956, he was an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.
